What You the Consumer can do

Be An Informed And Active Participant

  • Keep your medical history and information in an organized format and located for use in emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Identify the title/role of health care team members you come in contact with--the office clerk, nursing assistant, registered nurse, x-ray technician and others. Inquire about the number of registered nurses on staff when admitted for health care.
  • Arrange for a family member or close friend to accompany a seriously ill person during all health care interactions.
  • Write down all questions to be asked and be sure you understand all information provided by your health care practitioner. Ask about anything you do not understand or do not feel comfortable about.
  • Try to resolve problems with the practitioner involved, if that is not possible, seek assistance from that personšs supervisor.
  • Encourage others to become a professional nurse or consider other health careers.
  • Participate in health-related advocacy and legislation.
  • Communicate with legislators and policy-makers
